The goal of the Spanish classes is to introduce and improve the Spanish language to Saint Paul’s students according to their grades level. Students learn vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence’s structure related to daily life situations, all this by a native Spanish speaker within a Catholic environment. In addition to this, students are taught basic prayers in Spanish.
Classes are taught once a week according with the following criteria:
Kindergarten: Supported by videos, students are introduced to different concepts such as: numbers, colors, days of the week, farm animals, songs, and other simple things according to their age. Other topics are covered according to the season of the year.
1st, 2nd & 3rd grades: Lessons are focused on season of the year (including what to wear and activities to do in each season), days of the week, parts of the body, what to call each family member, and activities for different celebrations during the year such as: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, etc. Students use resources like videos and video games and are required to do homework and/or other home assignments.
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades: under the teacher instructions, students follow the assigned book for different teachings in topics such as:
How are we?
The family and the house
What we ate and where
Sports
In class and after
The program at this level makes strong emphasis on grammatical rules. Students at this level are taught to pray the rosary in Spanish as well as other Hispanic traditions.
Field Trip: The 8th graders at the end of the school year are taken to a restaurant and they are required to place their food order before the waiter who speaks Spanish.
